Pro Nature Organic Foods: Growing the Organic Basket

Pro Nature Organic Foods is strengthening its position in India’s evolving organic foods market by expanding its portfolio, distribution network and reach across a growing base of health-conscious consumers.

Founded in 2006 by Nidhi Gupta and Varun Gupta, Pro Nature Organic Foods Pvt. Ltd. has spent more than 20 years building a business around the belief that organic food can become a practical, everyday choice for Indian households. Based in Bengaluru, the company began with a focus on healthier food options while creating better outcomes for producers and the environment, and has since developed into an organic food brand with a broad pantry proposition. The founders bring more than 25 years of experience in organic foods, supported by a team of FMCG professionals and an experienced advisory board, as the company continues to build its presence across the category.

Its portfolio spans everyday staples and emerging health-oriented consumption occasions, covering grains and flours, breakfast products, millets, pulses and beans, spices and dry fruits, sweeteners and salt, edible oils and ghee, and processed foods. The products are certified organic by IMO Control, the Switzerland-based certification body, underpinning the brand’s emphasis on quality, sourcing and sustainability.

Beyond certification, Pro Nature’s proposition is closely linked to its engagement with the agricultural ecosystem, including partnerships with farmer groups to support their transition to organic farming and provide fair premiums for their produce. Its wider social focus also extends to supporting micro-enterprises, particularly those led by women entrepreneurs.

The company’s route to market has evolved considerably alongside India’s changing retail landscape. As Varun Gupta recalls, Pro Nature began as a brick-and-mortar, direct-to-consumer business, at a time when online D2C was yet to emerge, with door-to-door deliveries forming the initial distribution model. It subsequently shifted towards distributors and retailers before entering modern trade within a few years, beginning with Big Bazaar and then Reliance, followed by expansion across other organised retail channels.

The next phase came with online marketplaces, starting with BigBasket and later Amazon and others, before quick commerce emerged as another important inflection point. Geographical expansion has followed a similarly progressive path, taking the brand from its initial Bengaluru market into Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, followed by Delhi-NCR and other parts of India, with the company continuing to expand its footprint across the country.

Challenges From Awareness to Wider Adoption

Pro Nature’s challenges have evolved significantly over the course of its journey. In its early years, the primary task was to build awareness around organic food and educate distributors, retailers and consumers about its value proposition. As the category has matured, the challenge has shifted towards converting awareness into adoption, justifying the premium associated with organic staples and differentiating the brand in an increasingly crowded market. Distribution and market penetration also remain ongoing priorities as the company expands its footprint.

“When we started, nobody really knew what organic meant, so there was a lot of one-to-one education across the supply chain. Today, awareness has increased significantly, but the challenge is to convert more consumers by helping them understand the value proposition that organic offers. At the same time, we are competing with multiple brands making similar claims, so differentiation has become critical,” says Varun Gupta, Founder, Pro Nature Organic Foods Pvt. Ltd.

“The focus now is on strengthening what makes Pro Nature distinctive and giving consumers more reasons to choose the brand, while continuing to expand our sales, distribution and market reach,” he adds further.

Strength in Pulses and Spices

From Pro Nature’s perspective, the organic food basket broadly follows the consumption patterns of the wider staples market, with atta, rice and edible oils accounting for the highest household volumes. Within its own portfolio, however, the brand has built stronger traction in pulses and spices, which remain key categories for the business. While atta, rice and oils are highly competitive spaces with several established players, Pro Nature has seen stronger traction and consumer acceptance in pulses and spices.

Traceability Built into the Supply Chain

Pro Nature follows a structured FMCG supply-chain model, with a strong offline presence through distributors and leading retail partners such as Reliance and METRO. Its omnichannel presence is further strengthened through online platforms including Blinkit, Amazon and Swiggy Instamart. On the sourcing side, the brand works with long-term organic projects and suppliers with established credentials and a strong commitment to organic practices.

Supplier selection is therefore a rigorous process, with the company onboarding partners only after their sourcing practices and organic credentials are established. Traceability is an integral part of the organic certification framework, with every product required to pass through the government-mandated traceability system, ensuring visibility across the supply chain.

“For us, a supplier’s strong commitment to organic is essential before we bring them into our ecosystem. Complete traceability is also mandatory, so every product has to go through the required system,” explains Gupta.

The Road Ahead

Over the next 3-5 years, Pro Nature plans to expand its physical distribution across India, with a sharper focus on smaller towns and retail outlets beyond the larger stores. Strengthening online distribution is another priority, as the brand looks to build greater presence across digital channels. Export markets also represent a new growth opportunity. On the product side, Pro Nature aims to strengthen its presence in atta, rice and edible oils while exploring value-added categories, particularly snacks and other adjacent food segments.
