From 250 restaurants in 2021 to 600 today, Sapphire Foods has built one of India’s largest KFC operating platforms — and its new President & CEO says the next chapter is only beginning.

Sapphire Foods India has crossed a significant milestone with its KFC network reaching 600 restaurants in India, marking the first major landmark for Vikrant Vohra since he took over as President & CEO of KFC at Sapphire Foods in July 2026.

Announcing the achievement, Vohra put the emphasis not simply on the number of restaurants but on the people and operating discipline required to build and run a network of this scale. He acknowledged restaurant teams, operations and support colleagues, operators and partners who have contributed to the expansion.

His message also made the strategic intent clear: 600 is a milestone, not a finish line.

The Numbers Behind the Milestone

The journey to 600 has been rapid. Sapphire Foods had 250 KFC restaurants in December 2021. By the end of FY26, the network had expanded to 575 restaurants, with 73 new KFC outlets added during the year.

The business continued adding restaurants in FY27. By June 30, 2026, Sapphire operated 591 KFC restaurants, taking the network past the 600 mark subsequently.

The expansion has been accompanied by improving financial performance. KFC India revenue for FY26 stood at Rs 2,113.6 crore, an 11% increase over the previous year, while restaurant EBITDA margin was 16.3%.

The first quarter of FY27 brought further momentum. KFC revenue increased 17% year on year, same-store sales growth reached 5%, and restaurant EBITDA margin improved to 16.9%.

Beyond Metros: The Next Phase of the KFC Playbook

The significance of the 600-store network lies not merely in its size but in the geographical opportunity it creates.

India’s QSR market is increasingly moving beyond the traditional metropolitan catchments. For an international brand such as KFC, the opportunity is to make the product accessible to a much wider consumer base while maintaining consistent food quality, service and unit economics.

Sapphire has been expanding through a combination of restaurant formats and locations, including smaller-sized omnichannel restaurants. The strategy is supported by its existing operating infrastructure, supply chain and experience across multiple markets.

The company had also indicated plans to add 60–80 KFC restaurants during CY26, following 60 additions in CY25.

That pace suggests that the 600th restaurant is unlikely to remain a headline milestone for very long.

Value is Becoming Central to QSR Growth

Another important component of KFC’s recent performance has been its focus on value-led consumption.

The Rs 99 Chicken Krisper Burger Meal has been positioned as an entry point for consumers, while offers such as bucket promotions have helped encourage frequency and transactions.

For India’s QSR industry, this is an increasingly important battleground. Consumers may still want branded dining experiences, but affordability is influencing how frequently they participate.

KFC’s challenge is therefore not simply to attract customers to its restaurants, but to make the brand relevant for more occasions and more consumer segments.

The improvement in same-store sales during Q1 FY27 suggests that the strategy is beginning to translate into stronger customer activity.

600 Restaurants Require a Different Kind of Management

At 600 restaurants, the challenge changes fundamentally.

Expansion is no longer only about identifying locations and opening stores. It becomes an exercise in network management — ensuring consistency in food preparation, restaurant operations, manpower, supply availability, technology, customer experience and profitability across hundreds of outlets.

This is particularly relevant for KFC, where the product proposition depends heavily on operational consistency.

Sapphire has been investing in this operating backbone. Digital ordering, kiosks and its own customer ecosystem are increasingly becoming part of the restaurant model. By the end of 2025, KFC’s app had recorded 63 million downloads and 2.1 million monthly active users, while digital kiosks had been deployed across more than 70% of KFC restaurants.

The restaurant network is consequently becoming an increasingly integrated physical-and-digital business.

A New Leader at an Important Inflection Point

Vohra took charge of KFC at Sapphire Foods on July 25, 2026, moving from his previous role as Executive Vice President and CEO of the company’s Pizza Hut business.

He brings extensive experience across hospitality and foodservice, including earlier KFC operating responsibilities within Sapphire.

His arrival comes at an interesting point in the company’s evolution. The KFC business has achieved significant scale, consumer adoption is strengthening and the company is simultaneously preparing for a potentially much larger restaurant platform.

Sapphire Foods and Devyani International announced a proposed merger in January 2026. The combination is expected to create a substantially larger Yum! Brands-focused restaurant company in India, subject to completion and regulatory approvals.

Until then, Sapphire continues to operate its existing portfolio, which at June 30, 2026 comprised 1,074 restaurants across India, Sri Lanka and Maldives — including KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

The Opportunity is Bigger Than 600

The KFC milestone comes at a time when India’s organised foodservice industry is entering a new phase.

The first stage of the QSR story was about introducing global brands and establishing the category. The next was about building national footprints. The emerging phase is about scale with productivity — getting more consumers, more often, while protecting restaurant economics.

For KFC, Sapphire’s 600-restaurant network provides a powerful platform for that next phase.

And Vohra’s own words perhaps capture the mood best. After thanking the teams behind the milestone, he brought the focus back to the fundamentals: great chicken, great restaurants and great experiences for every guest, every time.

Then came the inevitable KFC punchline:

“FRY-nally 600.”

A neat line for a milestone. But the bigger story is what comes after it.

This version deliberately uses each fact only where it advances the story—milestone → numbers → geography → value → operating complexity → leadership → industry opportunity—without circling back to the same points.

From 250 restaurants in 2021 to 600 today, Sapphire Foods has built one of India’s largest KFC operating platforms — and its new President & CEO says the next chapter is only beginning.
