India’s health and wellness economy is entering a new phase, where transparency, convenience and functionality matter as much as taste.

Not too long ago, buying health foods and supplements often meant making a trip to a speciality nutrition store in search of protein powders or vitamin supplements. Today, wellness has become an everyday shopping priority. From supermarket aisles and neighbourhood kirana stores to café menus and quick-commerce platforms, health-focused foods and beverages have become impossible to ignore. The category has expanded far beyond traditional supplements to include functional foods, fortified snacks, clean-label products, plant-based alternatives, kombucha, electrolyte drinks, protein beverages, wellness shots and nutraceuticals, reflecting a fundamental shift in the way Indians eat and drink.

The COVID-19 pandemic marked a significant inflection point, accelerating consumer interest in preventive healthcare and pushing immunity, gut health, protein intake and holistic wellness to the centre of everyday consumption.

The numbers reflect this structural shift. According to a report by IMARC Group, India’s health and wellness market was valued at $164.35 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $257.94 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 5.14%. Within this, functional foods and beverages account for the largest share, that is, 42% of the market, underlining consumers’ growing appetite for products that deliver benefits beyond basic nutrition, whether in the form of immunity support, digestive health, hydration or sports nutrition.

The ripple effect is being felt well beyond retail shelves. Hotels, restaurants and cafés (HoReCa) are increasingly incorporating wellness-led offerings into their menus as consumers seek healthier choices even while dining out. High-protein breakfast bowls, kombucha on tap, cold-pressed juices, protein coffees, electrolyte beverages, sugar-free desserts and functional smoothies are becoming common across cafés, premium restaurants and hotel buffets.

This has opened new opportunities for health-focused brands such as Wellbeing Nutrition, Fast&Up, BigMuscles Nutrition and Borécha, alongside established players including Yoga Bar, The Whole Truth, OZiva, MuscleBlaze, Pintola, The Healthy Binge and Tata Soulfull, which are expanding across both retail and foodservice channels.

Health Integrated Into Daily Routines

Industry leaders believe this shift is redefining product innovation and creating new opportunities across the health foods and beverages category.

According to Avnish Chhabria, Founder, Wellbeing Nutrition, an Indian nutraceutical brand that produces organic, whole-food supplements, multi-vitamins, and more, wellness is no longer restricted to supplements but is influencing purchasing decisions across the entire food and beverage spectrum.

He says that the category is witnessing one of the biggest shifts in consumer behaviour over the last decade. Health is no longer confined to supplements; it’s influencing every aisle of the supermarket. Consumers are actively looking for protein in everyday foods, electrolyte-based hydration instead of sugary beverages, probiotic drinks for gut health, and functional ingredients that support immunity, sleep and cognitive performance.

Chhabria also attributes the shift not only to rising health awareness but also to the growing need for convenience. Rather than adopting separate wellness routines, consumers are choosing products that naturally integrate health benefits into their everyday lifestyles.

“People want better choices built into the routines they already have. That’s why we’re seeing protein coffees, kombuchas, electrolyte beverages, wellness shots and fortified snacks gaining traction. The lines between food, beverages and supplements are beginning to blur,” he says.

Echoing this sentiment, Jitika Gupta, Co-founder & Chief Marketing Officer, BigMuscles Nutrition, says protein has evolved from a niche fitness product into an everyday nutritional requirement as consumers adopt a more holistic approach to health.

“Post-pandemic, there has been a much stronger focus on immunity, recovery, satiety and long-term health, and protein naturally supports all of these needs. At the same time, growing awareness around protein gaps in Indian diets has encouraged consumers to be more mindful about meeting their daily nutritional requirements,” she explains.

Gupta also notes that consumer expectations have also expanded beyond traditional protein supplements – from powders and bars to ready-to-drink options while also expecting great taste, convenience, transparency and high-quality formulations. Protein is no longer viewed as a fitness purchase; it has become a part of a healthier everyday lifestyle.

Hydration Leads Demand

While hydration and energy continue to dominate demand, emerging needs such as recovery, better sleep, stress management and cognitive wellness are also shaping product innovation.

For Rohan Manglani, Head – Brand Marketing Strategy & Implementation, Fast&Up India, a nutrition brand specialising in active lifestyle supplements, sports nutrition, and daily vitamins, hydration has emerged as the category’s most significant growth opportunity because of its universal relevance. Rising temperatures, increasingly active lifestyles, frequent travel and longer working hours have all made consumers more conscious that optimal hydration is about more than simply drinking water but also involves replenishing essential electrolytes to support overall physical and cognitive performance.

He also notes that consumer expectations around energy have also evolved. Instead of relying on quick caffeine fixes, consumers are seeking products that provide sustained energy through balanced formulations enriched with vitamins, minerals and other functional ingredients.

Recovery, meanwhile, has expanded well beyond sports nutrition.

“Whether it’s recovering after a workout, a long day at work, extensive travel or simply coping with physical and mental fatigue, consumers are recognising that how well they recover directly impacts how they perform the next day,” he says, adding that recovery solutions are now finding acceptance among professionals, recreational fitness enthusiasts and everyday health-conscious consumers alike.

A similar evolution is unfolding in the premium tea segment. Ishan Varshnei, Co-Founder and CEO, Latambarcem Brewers (Borécha), a premium, health-focused functional beverage brand, highlights that consumers are increasingly choosing beverages that support both physical and mental well-being.

“Focus, sustained energy, and stress are becoming everyday concerns, especially among younger consumers and working professionals. Rather than adding another supplement to their routine, they are looking for beverages that naturally deliver these benefits,” he says.

Varshnei also states sleep and digestive health have emerged as important purchase drivers as consumers adopt a more preventive approach to wellness. This has encouraged brands to combine traditional botanicals with modern formulations that are both functional and easy to incorporate into everyday lifestyles.

What’s Next for Wellness

With wellness claims becoming commonplace, brands will need to differentiate themselves through transparency, science-backed formulations, convenient formats and stronger retail collaborations that make health-focused products easier to discover, understand and incorporate into everyday life.

As per Gupta, the growing popularity of high-protein products has increased the risk of the claim becoming overused, making credibility a key differentiator.

“As more brands enter the category, simply calling a product ‘high protein’ is no longer enough to stand out. Today’s consumers are much more informed and want to understand how much protein they’re actually getting, how the product fits into their daily diet and whether it genuinely delivers on its promise,” she says.

Looking ahead, Manglani remarks the next wave of innovation in functional beverages will be driven by products that combine efficacy, taste and convenience.

He expects clean-label formulations, low- and zero-sugar beverages, balanced electrolyte profiles, vitamins, minerals and science-backed ingredients to become industry benchmarks rather than differentiators. At the same time, consumers will increasingly demand greater transparency around ingredient functionality and product benefits.

Manglani also sees Ready-to-Drink (RTD) formats emerging as a major growth engine, supported by fast-paced lifestyles and rising demand for on-the-go nutrition.

“Convenience is no longer just an added benefit; it’s becoming a core purchase driver,” he says, adding that functional beverages will increasingly move beyond conventional retail shelves to locations such as quick-commerce platforms, fitness centres, airports, corporate offices, educational institutions and sports venues, where consumers are most likely to need them.

For Varshnei, premium tea is uniquely positioned to capitalise on the wellness movement because it already enjoys a trusted place in consumers’ daily routines.

He believes retailers are responding to consumers’ growing preference for beverages that combine taste, convenience, quality and functional benefits. He expects RTD formats, including functional sparkling iced teas, to play a significant role in expanding the category while making wellness more accessible for consumers on the move.

Echoing the importance of retail, Chhabria says partnerships between brands and retailers will be critical in accelerating mainstream adoption. He believes that while quick-commerce has significantly improved accessibility, the next opportunity lies in combining availability with education through curated wellness aisles, in-store experiences, digital recommendations and retailer-led content.

The future of wellness will be decided less by bold claims and more by everyday habits. Consumers are increasingly choosing products that fit effortlessly into their lifestyles, whether it’s a protein-rich snack, an electrolyte drink or a functional tea. For brands, the challenge will be to earn trust through innovation and transparency, while retailers will play an equally important role in making these choices more visible, accessible and easier to understand. Together, they will define how wellness is experienced in India’s evolving food retail market.
