Following a strong nationwide response to the Protein Cold Foam collaboration launched earlier this year, TATA Starbucks and SuperYou are introducing a new lineup of protein-powered beverages. Headlining the expansion is a signature Starbucks, the Brown Sugar Cinnamon Oat Iced Shaken Espresso, topped with SuperYou’s Vanilla Protein Cold Foam. Inspired by Ranveer’s own coffee ritual, the beverage combines a bold hand-shaken espresso with notes of brown sugar and cinnamon, finished with a creamy SuperYou Pro vanilla protein cold foam.

The new SuperYou + Starbucks menu launch saw Ranveer Singh step behind the counter to experience this signature beverage himself, as fans gathered in excitement. The day was all about India’s coffee and protein culture colliding, aptly described by Ranveer Singh as “a blockbuster in a glass”.

Ranveer Singh, Co-founder, SuperYou, said, “Coffee has always been more than just a beverage for me, it’s been a ritual. Starbucks signature Iced Shaken Espresso is bold, smooth, and full of character, and adding SuperYou’s vanilla protein cold foam is the perfect upgrade. I’m excited for people across the country to try it, customize it, and make it their own.”

Adrit Mishra, COO, TATA Starbucks, said, “The response to Protein Cold Foam across Starbucks stores in India has been incredibly encouraging, reflecting a growing shift toward everyday choices that feel both accessible and personalized. Through our partnership with SuperYou and Ranveer Singh, we’re enabling small, intentional upgrades to daily coffee rituals, allowing customers to shape their Starbucks experience in ways that feel relevant and effortless. Expanding this collaboration allows us to continue innovating at the intersection of taste, customization, and evolving lifestyle preferences, while offering customers even more ways to customize the beverages they know and love.”

Commenting on the launch, Nikunj Biyani, Co-Founder, SuperYou, said, “Early on, we saw that when protein is added to something as habitual as coffee, it becomes far easier for people to adopt it. We’re excited for this on-going journey with Starbucks, on adding even more choices on how people have their protein every day. My favorite is the mango protein foam!”

The SuperYou + Starbucks menu is available across 500+ Starbucks outlets in India, both online and at physical stores. Just in time for summer, customers will also be able to try the refreshing Mango Frappuccino Protein Cold Foam across Starbucks stores in India.

Customers can continue customising their favourite cold beverages with SuperYou Pro Protein Cold Foam flavours, including Vanilla, Chocolate, and the new Mango Cold Foam, adding 11g to 18g of protein.

Starbucks Chairman & CEO Brian Niccol’s India Visit Marks a New Blueprint for the Next 500

Niccol’s India visit — including a meeting over coffee with Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran — signals a decisive pivot in the company’s India playbook as it celebrates its 500th store milestone and lays the foundation for the next chapter of sustainable, profitable and purpose-led growth.

A Milestone Moment With a Deeper Meaning

Starbucks’ 500th India store, opening this week at Godrej GCR in Gurgaon, is more than a numeric milestone. It marks the midpoint of a long-held ambition first articulated by former global CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who publicly projected India as “a priority market” and set the tone for a 1,000-store trajectory.

Now, as the company reaches halfway, the baton passes into the hands of Brian Niccol — whose India visit this week reinforces a shift from aggressive scale to quality expansion, sustainability, and stronger unit economics.

Niccol met Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran at India’s first Starbucks Reserve® store in Mumbai, symbolically tying together Starbucks’ global leadership and Tata’s deep India presence. It was a quiet but strategic moment: a reset, a reaffirmation and a roadmap discussion over coffee.

“We’re partnering with Tata to shape the future of coffee in India,” Niccol said during his visit. “It’s a long-term commitment to build a stronger, more sustainable coffee ecosystem — from bean to cup.”

Reaching 500 Stores: The Story Behind the Milestone

Starbucks’ India journey began with its iconic Horniman Circle flagship in 2012, where queues curled around the block for a taste of global café culture. The brand’s expansion became a case study in balancing aspiration with affordability, and premium experience with mass adoption.

Today, with 500 stores across 81 cities, the joint venture has accelerated into new geographies, new formats and deeper local relevance. Q2 results reinforced this momentum:

8% YoY revenue growth

Positive same-store sales growth (SSSG)

Seven new stores added despite economic headwinds

New experiential formats in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai

Local innovations such as the Pujo menu driving sharper regional penetration

Financially, the JV’s FY25 revenue reached ₹1,277 crore, while losses widened due to accelerated expansion and investment-heavy formats. But insiders acknowledge that this “valley of investment” is intentional — a bridge to a healthier next phase.

A New Strategic Anchor: Farmer Support Partnership (FSP)

One of the most significant announcements of Niccol’s visit is the launch of the Farmer Support Partnership (FSP) — a long-term agronomy, sustainability and value-chain strengthening initiative that aims to empower 10,000 Indian coffee farmers by 2030.

Starbucks Coffee Trading Company (SCTC) and Tata Starbucks will jointly run the FSP, based in Karnataka, supporting farmers across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala through:

Model farms to test sustainable solutions

Global agronomy knowledge sharing

New varietals and high-yield Arabica seedlings

Digital agronomy training

Regenerative agriculture guidance

Tata Starbucks CEO Sushant Dash called it “a meaningful step toward strengthening India’s coffee-growing community and securing the future of high-quality Arabica.”
Tata Consumer MD & CEO Sunil D’Souza added: “This initiative pairs Starbucks global agronomy expertise with Tata’s India footprint to drive tangible impact on the ground.”

This move positions Starbucks as not just a café brand but an origin-engaged institution, securing credibility for the next decade.

Niccol’s India Playbook: Quality Before Quantity

If Narasimhan gave India the scale ambition, Niccol is giving it discipline.

The current CEO’s approach places profitability, localization and digital intelligence at the centre of every new store. Expansion will continue — but every outlet must serve a clear purpose, audience and commercial logic.

Niccol is known globally for simplifying menus, improving service fundamentals and investing in partner (employee) experiences. His India visit restates this on-ground and signals that the next 500 stores will grow more thoughtfully than the first 500.

The Next 500: What Will Change

1. A Focus on Profitability, Relevance and Digital Optimization

Niccol’s insistence on making each store profitable, locally relevant and digitally optimised represents a fundamental shift. Stores will be evaluated on neighbourhood needs, customer flows, digital engagement and operating efficiency. AI-led beverage insights, personalised offers and operational digital tools will increasingly shape performance.

2. Format and Occasion-Led Innovation

The next 500 stores will look decidedly different:

More Reserve locations for elevated coffee craft

Drive-thrus along highways and dense metros

Compact kiosks in airports, transit hubs and corporate zones

Tier-3 and Tier-4 stores designed for leaner costs and higher throughput

This recalibration ensures Starbucks meets India’s contextual consumption patterns, not just its real-estate availability.

3. Deeper Localization

Starbucks will double down on food — the real frequency engine in India. More India-first beverages, festival specials, familiar snacking options and price-band adjustments will sharpen its everyday appeal.

4. Sustainability and Farmer Connectivity

The FSP becomes the defining pillar of Starbucks’ India strategy, embedding long-term agricultural equity, regenerative practices and supply-chain resilience.

The Next 500: A Strategic Pivot, Not a Celebration

Within Starbucks India, executives describe this milestone as a strategic fulcrum rather than a finish line. The second act will be:

More digital: loyalty, personalisation, AI-driven beverage innovation

More local: menus, store design, community programming

More disciplined: clearer profitability targets

More purposeful: farmer empowerment & sustainability

Narasimhan built the ambition; Niccol’s actions signal execution with maturity.

Industry Signals: What This Means for India’s Foodservice Market

Starbucks’ evolving strategy illustrates a larger shift in India’s café/QSR sector:

Expansion is moving from footprint-led to value-led.

Global brands are embracing native menu identity.

Supply chains are shifting from import-driven to origin-integrated.

Formats are diversifying into a true omnichannel presence.

Starbucks is now crafting a playbook others will inevitably study.

The Larger Meaning of the 500-Store Celebration

This milestone is not merely a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Gurgaon — it represents a strategic reset in how Starbucks engages with India. From premium café culture to agricultural investment, from metro-heavy presence to nationwide format diversification, from global uniformity to Indian relevance, Starbucks is re-architecting itself for long-term resilience.

The story of India’s first 500 Starbucks stores was one of discovery, aspiration and scale.
The story of the next 500 will be one of discipline, localisation, sustainability and purpose.

And with Brian Niccol’s India visit, the second act has officially begun.

Akash Srivastava has been appointed as Chief Development Officer by Devyani International, a pivotal role as the company navigates its aggressive expansion and brand diversification strategies. With over 15 years of experience in real estate and business development across prominent brands like Starbucks, KFC, and Raymond, Srivastava’s expertise is expected to play a crucial role in Devyani’s next phase of growth.

Educational Background and Early Career

Srivastava holds a B.Sc. in Hospitality & Hotel Administration from IHM Lucknow and an MBA in Retail & Merchandising Management from BIMTECH. His career commenced in the hospitality industry, where he gained foundational experience in operations and customer service.

Professional Trajectory

His initial roles included positions at KFC India, where he managed real estate and expansion efforts, and at Starbucks India, where he contributed to market research, store strategy, and layout planning. Srivastava’s tenure at Chaayos and Jubilant FoodWorks further honed his skills in business development, real estate strategy, and multi-brand expansion.

At Raymond Limited, Srivastava led business development and real estate expansion across various brands, including The Raymond Shop and Park Avenue. This experience broadened his understanding of retail dynamics beyond the food and beverage sector.

Devyani International’s Growth and Challenges

Devyani International has experienced significant growth, reporting a 39.2% year-on-year increase in revenue for FY25, totaling ₹4,951 crore. The company added 257 net new stores during the fiscal year, bringing its total to 2,039 outlets across India, Thailand, Nigeria, and Nepal. However, this expansion has been accompanied by challenges, including increased operating expenses and pressure on profit margins.

The company’s core brands—KFC, Pizza Hut, and Costa Coffee—have shown mixed performance. While Costa Coffee demonstrated strong momentum with a 30.8% revenue growth, KFC and Pizza Hut faced declines in same-store sales, indicating potential areas for operational improvement.

Strategic Focus Areas for Srivastava

In his new role, Srivastava is expected to focus on several key areas:

Real Estate Optimization: Ensuring cost-effective lease agreements and efficient store layouts to improve profitability.

Format Innovation: Developing smaller, delivery-focused store formats to adapt to changing consumer behaviors.

Expansion into Tier II and III Cities: Identifying and capitalizing on growth opportunities in smaller cities to drive future growth.

Brand Integration: Streamlining operations and aligning development strategies across Devyani’s diverse brand portfolio.

Akash Srivastava’s appointment as Chief Development Officer at Devyani International marks a strategic move to strengthen the company’s expansion efforts and operational efficiency. His extensive experience in real estate and business development positions him to address the challenges associated with rapid growth and to contribute to Devyani’s continued success in the competitive QSR industry.

BigBasket, the Tata Group-owned online grocery platform, has officially stepped into the fast-growing rapid food delivery market with the launch of a 10-minute delivery service in select areas of Bengaluru. The new offering features popular food and beverage items from Starbucks, operated under the Tata umbrella.

The launch marks BigBasket’s formal entry into the quick service space, a move that follows co-founder and CEO Hari Menon’s December 2024 announcement on social media outlining the company’s plans to diversify its offerings in 2025. These included expanding stock keeping units (SKUs) in tier I cities, launching pharmaceutical delivery in partnership with Tata 1mg, and foraying into food delivery.

BigBasket’s new 10-minute delivery menu includes beverages such as coffee, tea, and juices, along with snacks, desserts, and meal bowls. Starbucks operates in India as a joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks Corporation, while Qmin, launched in 2020 by Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), offers meals from a network of Tata-owned restaurants and operates standalone Qmin Cafés. Eleven Qmin outlets are currently active in Bengaluru, supporting the new rapid delivery rollout.

The move comes amid intensifying competition in India’s quick commerce space, with players like Zepto, Swiggy, and Blinkit rapidly expanding their food delivery verticals. Industry sources have indicated that Tata Sons had earlier expressed concern over BigBasket’s delayed entry into the segment and had suggested exploring external funding of up to $1 billion (₹8,556 crore) to scale operations and remain competitive.

With this launch, BigBasket aims to tap into the growing demand from urban consumers for ultra-fast, high-quality meal options, while further integrating its services within the Tata Group’s expanding digital ecosystem.

US-based coffee chain Starbucks has launched its first-ever coffee experiential store in India, located at Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi, according to a company press release on Friday.

The new store offers a selection of sixteen specialty coffees from around the world, along with an exclusive lineup of beverages inspired by Indian flavours from states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Meghalaya.

Additionally, customers can personalise their coffee in various ways. For the first time in India, Starbucks will also introduce the AeroPress brewing method, allowing customers to experience coffee brewed using this technique.

“The launch of our first coffee experiential store in New Delhi, our first store among many upcoming similar stores in the country, represents our celebration of Indian coffee heritage through variety, artistry and food theatre, complimented by a host of international coffee offerings,” said Sushant Dash, CEO, Starbucks India.

The new store will be open to the public from 8 AM to 11 PM on all days of the week.

Starbucks-branded coffee chain in India is operated by a 50:50 joint-venture between Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee Co. and Tata Consumer Products Ltd. Today, it operates over 445 stores across the country.

The coffee chain is aggressively expanding its retail presence in India, with plans to reach 1,000 stores by 2028 by opening one new store every three days, according to the company’s official website.

The beverage giant announced its intention to double its workforce, reaching around 8,600 partners from the current 4,300. This expansion plan involves venturing into tier 2 and 3 cities in India, as well as extending services to drive-thrus, airports, and 24-hour store formats to cater to customers’ diverse needs.

Starbucks is expanding its presence with more specialty stores in India. It recently opened its first pet-friendly store in India, located at Jaipur, first-ever store within a court in India at Delhi High Court and its first store in a metro station at the Western Express Highway metro station in Mumbai.

The company also unveiled its first certified Greener store in India located in Punjab, which was awarded the Greener Store of the Year in the Asia Pacific region.

Starbucks has announced that Brian Niccol has been appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Niccol will start in his new role on September 9, 2024. Starbucks Chief Financial Officer, Rachel Ruggeri, will serve as interim CEO until that time. Ruggeri is a 23-year Starbucks partner. She has been CFO since 2021. Mellody Hobson, Starbucks Board Chair, will become Lead Independent Director.

Niccol replaces Laxman Narasimhan, whose tenure only lasted a year-and-a-half after he was originally brought in as CEO in March 2023 to engineer a ‘reinvention’ of the world’s biggest coffee chain. Since then, the stock has continued to falter, losing nearly one-quarter of its value.

Laxman Narasimhan is stepping down from his role as CEO and as a member of the Starbucks board with immediate effect. During his tenure, he improved the Starbucks partner experience, drove significant innovation in our supply chain, and enhanced our store operations.

“On behalf of the board, I want to sincerely thank Laxman for his contributions to Starbucks, and his dedication to our people and brand,” said Hobson. “In the face of some challenging headwinds, Laxman has been laser focused on improving the business to meet the needs of our customers and partners. We all wish him the very best and know he will do great things in the future.”

About Brian Niccol

Niccol joined Chipotle as Chief Executive Officer and a director in March 2018, and became Chairman of the Board in March 2020. Before joining Chipotle, he served as Chief Executive of Taco Bell. Before becoming CEO he held roles including Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer, and President. He also served in leadership roles at Pizza Hut, another division of Yum! Brands. He began his career in brand management at Procter and Gamble.

Niccol currently serves as Chairman and CEO of Chipotle and he is also on the board of directors of Walmart Inc. He previously served on the board of KB Home and Harley-Davidson. Niccol holds an undergraduate degree from Miami University and an MBA from the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business.

Since becoming CEO in 2018, Niccol has transformed Chipotle. His focus on people and culture, brand, menu innovation, operational excellence, and digital transformation have set new standards in the industry and driven significant growth and value creation. Revenue has nearly doubled, profits have increased nearly sevenfold, and the stock price has increased by nearly 800% during his leadership, all while increasing wages for retail team members, expanding benefits, and strengthening the culture.

“We are thrilled to welcome Brian to Starbucks. His phenomenal career speaks for itself. Brian is a culture carrier who brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of driving innovation and growth. Like all of us at Starbucks, he understands that a remarkable customer experience is rooted in an exceptional partner experience,” said Mellody Hobson, Starbucks Board Chair & Lead Independent Director. “Our board believes he will be a transformative leader for our company, our people, and everyone we serve around the world.”

“I am excited to join Starbucks and grateful for the opportunity to help steward this incredible company, alongside hundreds of thousands of devoted partners,” said Niccol. “I have long-admired Starbucks iconic brand, unique culture and commitment to enhancing human connections around the globe. As I embark upon this journey, I am energised by the tremendous potential to drive growth and further enhance the Starbucks experience for our customers and partners, while staying true to our mission and values.”

“Having followed Brian’s leadership and transformation journey at Chipotle, I’ve long admired his leadership impact. His retail excellence and track record in delivering extraordinary shareholder value recognizes the critical human element it takes to lead a culture and values driven enterprise. I believe he is the leader Starbucks needs at a pivotal moment in its history. He has my respect and full support,” said Howard Schultz, Starbucks Founder & Chairman Emeritus. “I thank Mellody and the Starbucks board for their deep commitment to shaping the future of this remarkable global phenomenon that is Starbucks.”

About Starbucks

Since 1971, Starbucks Coffee Company has been committed to ethically sourcing and roasting high-quality arabica coffee. Today, with more than 39,000 stores worldwide, the company is the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee in the world. Through our unwavering commitment to excellence and our guiding principles, we bring the unique Starbucks Experience to life for every customer through every cup.
