The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced new amendments to the labelling and display regulations. Under these new regulations, food brands and packaged food companies must use larger fonts and bold letters for important nutritional information such as sugar, salt, and saturated fat. The aim of this move is to help consumers make more informed and healthier choices.

These new labelling requirements will take effect from January 1, 2025, giving manufacturers time to update their packaging designs to comply with the new guidelines. Bygiving companies a full year and a half to adapt, the FSSAI aims to facilitate a smooth transition without causing undue disruption to the industry.

However, many packaged food companies are seeking more clarity on the recent proposal by FSSAI. This development comes at a time when public health activists have been urging FSSAI to implement front-of-the-pack labelling norms.

The FSSAI’s new labelling regulations represent a significant step towards improving consumer awareness and promoting healthier eating habits. However, the successful implementation of these changes will depend on clear and detailed guidelines from the FSSAI and the willingness of food manufacturers to comply with the new standards.
