Emami Agrotech Limited (EAL), the branded foods arm of Emami Group, has entered India’s fast-growing packaged snacking market with the launch of WeMe, a digital-first brand tailored to the evolving tastes and on-the-go lifestyles of today’s consumers.

The launch marks a strategic expansion of Emami Agrotech’s food portfolio beyond edible oils and pantry staples under its Emami Healthy & Tasty umbrella. With WeMe, the company is creating a dedicated snacking platform focused on innovation, premium offerings, and digital-first consumer engagement as it strengthens its presence in the broader FMCG landscape.

India’s snacking market is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by shifting consumer preferences and changing lifestyles. While taste and affordability remain essential, today’s consumers—particularly Gen Z and Millennials—are increasingly seeking snacks that combine convenience, indulgence, quality, and authenticity. These younger cohorts are embracing all-day snacking across work, travel, entertainment, and social occasions, while the rapid growth of quick commerce is accelerating product discovery and making a wider range of snack brands accessible to consumers across the country.

Built around the philosophy “Togetherness Always Tastes Better,” WeMe enters the market with a portfolio across three categories—Choco Hazelnut Spread, featuring India’s first portable chiplet-format offering; Jhuri Aloo Bhaja, bringing the popular Eastern Indian snack into the organised packaged foods segment; and Potato Chips, available in flavours tailored to evolving consumer tastes.

Speaking on the launch, Aditya Vardhan Agarwal, Director, Emami Group, said, “At Emami Agrotech, we have always believed food is about more than satisfying hunger—it’s about earning consumer trust through quality, relevance and innovation. Having built a strong foods portfolio under Healthy & Tasty, WeMe marks our strategic entry into one of India’s fastest-growing food categories. Backed by a planned investment of nearly Rs. 750 crore, we aim to build WeMe into a Rs. 1,000 crore brand over the next five to seven years while creating more than 1,000 direct and nearly 3,000 indirect jobs. This marks an important milestone in our vision of transforming Emami Agrotech into a comprehensive food company.”

Manish Goenka, Director, Emami Group, added, “As consumers increasingly seek products that combine taste, convenience and innovation, WeMe reflects our confidence in the long-term growth potential of India’s snacking market. Supported by our trusted food credentials and deep understanding of Indian consumers, we see WeMe as a long-term growth platform for our foods business, with a strong pipeline of products planned across multiple snacking categories.”

Positioned as a digital-first brand, WeMe will leverage creator-led content, social media and quick commerce to connect with younger consumers. The brand will debut across leading quick-commerce platforms in Kolkata, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, ensuring immediate availability in key urban markets. Alongside its quick-commerce launch, WeMe will begin expanding through general trade, starting with Kolkata before gradually entering other cities.

Highlighting the brand’s consumer-centric approach, Vidula Agarwal, Director, Emami Group, said, “The new generation doesn’t simply buy products—they discover them through conversations, creators and communities. That’s why WeMe has been built as a digital-first brand where content, commerce and consumer engagement come together seamlessly. This distribution strategy will enable us to make WeMe instantly accessible across key cities while allowing us to continuously learn from consumers, innovate faster and respond to emerging trends. We want WeMe to become much more than a snacking brand—we want it to become part of the everyday moments that bring people together.”

Parag Milk Foods Ltd. (PMFL), one of India’s leading dairy FMCG companies, has announced an expansion of the company’s cheese manufacturing capacity from 60 metric tonnes per day (MT/day) to 120 MT/day. This was decided by the Board of Directors who perceived the capacity enhancement as a part of PMFL’s long-term growth strategy in order to meet the rising demand for its cheese and whey protein portfolio. This will also unlock the new growth opportunities across the dairy value chain, involving an estimated capital expenditure of Rs. 105 Cr to be funded from mix of internal accruals and debt. The expansion is likely to complete by FY28.

Under its flagship brand Go Cheese, PMFL has built one of India’s leading cheese portfolios, commanding an estimated 35% market share. The company is also a key supplier to institutional customers, including hotels, restaurants and catering (HoReCa) businesses, while maintaining a strong presence across general trade, modern trade, e-commerce and quick commerce channels. The expansion comes at a time when India’s cheese market is witnessing robust growth.

The Go Cheese portfolio includes mozzarella, processed cheese, cheddar, cheese slices, spreads, cheese cubes, cheese sauces, cream cheese, pizza cheese and a range of speciality chees solutions serving both retail and food service customers. Catering to the premium segment, its flagship Pride of Cows brand follows a unique farm-to-home, single-origin model, delivering high-quality fresh dairy products to discerning consumers.

Commenting on the development, Rahul Kumar Srivastava, Chief Operating Officer, Parag Milk Foods Ltd, said, “Cheese is one of the key growth drivers for Parag Milk Foods and a strategic pillar of our value-added products portfolio. This Board approval marks another important step in our phased roadmap towards 120 MT per day and reflects our confidence in the long-term potential of the category. The additional capacity enhances manufacturing efficiency, strengthen our ability to meet growing customer demand and support future product innovation.”

PMFL’s diversified portfolio spans everyday dairy staples such as ghee, dahi, paneer and liquid milk under the Gowardhan brand, alongside value-added offerings including cheese, UHT milk, buttermilk, lassi and flavoured milk under the Go brand. Beyond its core dairy portfolio, PMFL has established a strong presence in the fast-growing sports nutrition segment through Avvatar, India’s first 100% vegetarian whey protein brand.

The company is focused on strengthening its position as a global nutrition provider while building one of India’s leading health- and nutrition-focused dairy FMCG businesses through continuous innovation and high-quality products.

Ferrero India has strengthened its commercial leadership team with the elevation of Shashank Gaur as Head of Organised Trade, placing an experienced consumer goods executive at the helm of its Modern Trade and E-commerce business in India.

With close to two decades of experience spanning sales, trade marketing, key accounts and commercial strategy across leading FMCG organisations, Gaur brings a strong understanding of both traditional and organised retail channels. His elevation comes at a time when modern retail and digital commerce are becoming increasingly important touchpoints for consumer brands looking to deepen reach, improve visibility and accelerate category growth.

Gaur has been associated with Ferrero since 2022 and has held key responsibilities within the organisation, including Area Lead – Modern Trade & Traditional Trade APAC and Head of Trade Marketing, Ferrero India. During his tenure, he has worked across trade channels and markets, contributing to the company’s commercial and go-to-market priorities.

Before joining Ferrero, Gaur built his career across several prominent consumer goods companies, holding senior commercial and sales leadership positions at Zydus Wellness, The Kraft Heinz Company, Cargill and Reckitt Benckiser. His experience across categories and distribution formats has equipped him with expertise in customer development, trade strategy, channel management and business growth.

The appointment also reflects the growing strategic importance of organised trade for consumer brands in India, as shoppers increasingly move between physical retail, marketplaces and digital-first commerce platforms. His mandate will encompass customer strategy, joint business planning and execution across key modern retail and digital commerce channels, bringing together Ferrero’s brand ambitions with evolving shopper behaviour and retailer priorities.

For Gaur, the elevation marks the next chapter of a journey that has spanned markets, channels and some of the world’s best-known consumer businesses. Now, with Ferrero India’s organised trade mandate under his leadership, the focus shifts from building presence to building momentum – strengthening partnerships, unlocking category opportunities and ensuring the company’s brands stay closely aligned with where and how India shops.

DSM Fresh Foods Ltd., the company behind direct-to-consumer meat and seafood brand Zappfresh, has expanded its frozen vegetarian convenience food brand, Meevaa Foods, to Mumbai and Bengaluru, marking the next phase of its growth strategy. The complete portfolio of 12 Meevaa products is available across select serviceable pin codes in both cities through the Zappfresh app and website.

To commemorate Zappfresh’s 11th anniversary, the company launched its ’11:11′ campaign, offering every Meevaa product at Rs. 11 for 11 days. The campaign generated 343,000 orders across Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru while bringing in more than 2,400 first-time customers, highlighting the increasing demand for high-protein, ready-to-cook vegetarian snacks and convenience foods among urban consumers.

The expansion leverages Zappfresh’s existing operations and cold-chain infrastructure in Mumbai and Bengaluru, enabling Meevaa Foods to scale efficiently while maintaining product quality, freshness and reliable last-mile delivery. The company has planned an initial fulfilment capacity of more than 2,000 orders per city every month and expects the two markets to contribute 50–60% of Meevaa’s direct-to-consumer business over the long term.

Commenting on the expansion Priya Agarwaal, Director, DSM Fresh Foods Ltd. said, “Mumbai and Bengaluru were a natural choice for Meevaa Foods as Zappfresh has already established a strong operational and consumer presence in both markets. Today’s consumers are looking for food that delivers convenience without compromising on taste, nutrition or authenticity. With Meevaa, we have brought the rich, familiar flavours of North Indian cuisine into a modern, ready-to-cook format that fits seamlessly into fast-paced urban lifestyles. We also see a growing shift towards protein-rich snacking, with consumers becoming more conscious about what they eat while expecting convenience at the same time. The response to our launch reaffirms our belief that premium frozen vegetarian foods are no longer a niche category but an emerging mainstream choice for India’s metro consumers. This expansion is another step towards making quality, high-protein convenience foods accessible to more households across the country.”

The company’s early performance in Delhi NCR underscores the brand’s growing traction. Since launching in the region earlier this year, Meevaa Foods has recorded a repeat purchase rate of 55%, reflecting strong customer acceptance. During the anniversary campaign, overall orders rose by nearly 40%, while the customer base expanded by 30%. Among the top-selling products were Tandoori Paneer Power Momos, Veg Noodle Spring Rolls, Paneer Smash Patty and Paneer Samosa.

Following its entry into Mumbai and Bengaluru, Meevaa Foods plans to deepen its presence in existing markets through new consumer engagement initiatives and product discovery campaigns. The company is also expanding its international footprint by exporting to markets such as Saudi Arabia, Canada and the United Kingdom, aligning with its strategy of taking Indian convenience foods to global consumers.

Going forward, DSM Fresh Foods will continue to introduce regional and festive campaigns while increasing Meevaa’s availability through quick commerce platforms. The company aims to strengthen its reach across Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru as it capitalises on the growing demand for premium convenience foods in India.

Mast Banarasi Paan, one of India’s largest organised tobacco-free paan café chains, has crossed the milestone of 400 outlets across the country and is targeting 600 outlets over the next two years. As part of its next phase of growth, the company is exploring strategic growth capital to support expansion, strengthen its technology and supply chain capabilities, and enhance its franchise ecosystem.

As India’s paan market evolves, the company sees a significant opportunity to bring greater standardisation, consistency and accessibility to one of the country’s oldest culinary traditions while re imagining it for modern consumers. The milestone comes amid growing consumer demand for organised, hygienic and experience-led food service formats across traditionally unorganised categories. Against this backdrop, Mast Banarasi Paan sees a significant opportunity to bring greater standardisation, consistency and accessibility to one of India’s oldest culinary traditions.

India’s paan market is estimated to be worth over Rs. 5,000 crore, yet remains overwhelmingly fragmented, with organised retail accounting for only a small share of the category. The proposed capital will support geographical expansion, technology infrastructure, central sourcing, supply chain capabilities and brand-building initiatives, while deepening the company’s presence across metropolitan as well as Tier II and Tier III markets.

Today, with more than 400 outlets across 20+ states and over 320 cities, Mast Banarasi Paan has built one of the country’s largest organised tobacco-free paan retail networks. The company is also evaluating opportunities in international markets with significant Indian diaspora populations as it charts its next phase of growth. The expansion comes at a time when Banarasi Paan is receiving renewed policy recognition. The Uttar Pradesh Government recently included Banarasi Paan under its One District One Cuisine (ODOC) initiative, aimed at promoting iconic regional cuisines through branding, entrepreneurship and market access.

At the core of the company’s proposition is its commitment to offering 100% tobacco-free paan. By separating the culinary experience of paan from tobacco consumption, Mast Banarasi Paan seeks to present the traditional Indian mouth freshener in a modern, hygienic and family-friendly format.

Commenting on the milestone, Panchanand Thakur, Founder & CEO, Mast Banarasi Paan, said, “Paan has long been an integral part of India’s culinary and cultural heritage, but the category has remained largely unorganised. We see a growing preference for trusted brands that offer quality, consistency and hygiene while preserving authenticity. Our focus is on expanding responsibly, strengthening our operating capabilities and making the Banarasi paan experience accessible to consumers across the country.”

Alongside traditional favourites such as meetha and sada paan, the company continues to expand its portfolio with contemporary offerings to cater to evolving consumer preferences. Its franchise-led model has also enabled entrepreneurs across Tier I, II and III cities to participate in organised food retail through standardised operating systems, technology-enabled processes and central sourcing.

Mast Banarasi Paan is tapping into the growing consumer preference for organised, hygienic and experience-led food service formats across traditionally unorganised categories. Looking ahead, Mast Banarasi Paan will continue to focus on disciplined expansion, operational excellence, product innovation and strengthening its franchise partner ecosystem as it scales its presence across existing and new markets.

Open Secret, a healthy snaking startup, has raised Rs.50 crore in a funding round led by Desai Brothers Ltd., as the Mumbai-based brand looks to accelerate its expansion amid rising consumer demand for clean-label and better-for-you food products. Prior to the latest round, Open Secret had reportedly secured around Rs. 80–90 crore in institutional funding from investors including Matrix Partners India, Sixth Sense Ventures, and Ananta Capital.

The funding comes at a time when India’s healthy snacking market is witnessing robust growth, driven by increasing consumer awareness around nutrition, ingredient transparency, and wellness-oriented lifestyles. The category has attracted substantial investor interest over the past few years, with several brands competing to capture a larger share of the country’s evolving packaged foods market. The company was valued at approximately Rs.226 crore as of March 2025 and reported annual revenue of around Rs.54 crore for FY24.

The investment marks a strategic partnership between one of India’s emerging health-focused packaged food brands and a nearly 120-year-old business house with deep distribution capabilities across key markets. While the companies have not disclosed the valuation at which the transaction was completed, the capital is expected to support Open Secret’s next phase of growth, including product innovation, distribution expansion, brand building, and operational scale-up.

Founded in 2019 by Ahana Gautam and Udit Kejriwal, Open Secret has carved out a niche in the rapidly growing healthy snacks category through its portfolio of cookies, chocolates, bhujia, nut mixes, and other snack products positioned as free from maida, palm oil, and added preservatives. The brand has particularly resonated with families and parents seeking healthier alternatives for everyday snacking.

“This investment is a strong validation of our vision to make healthier snacking accessible to Indian consumers at scale,” the company spokesperson said at the announcement. The founders noted that the partnership would help strengthen the brand’s presence across channels while supporting its long-term growth ambitions.

For Desai Brothers, the investment aligns with its strategy of expanding its footprint in the fast-growing consumer foods segment. The diversified conglomerate has interests spanning food, tobacco, hospitality, renewable energy, and financial services, and also operates snack-focused businesses through its food portfolio. Industry observers believe the group’s extensive distribution reach across North and West India could provide a significant boost to Open Secret’s offline expansion plans.

Since its launch, Open Secret has expanded its distribution across e-commerce platforms, quick-commerce channels, modern trade stores, and traditional retail networks. Company commentary in recent months has indicated that the brand is targeting gross revenue of around ₹100 crore this year while laying the foundation for significantly larger scale in the years ahead.

The latest fundraise underscores growing investor confidence in India’s premium and health-focused food brands, a segment that continues to benefit from changing consumer preferences and higher spending on wellness products. With fresh capital, a strategic investor, and a rapidly expanding market opportunity, Open Secret is positioning itself to emerge as one of the leading players in the country’s next generation of packaged snack brands.

Three years after launching Sumosave with the ambition of building what he calls “Bharat’s modern ration ki dukaan,” retail veteran Mohit Kampani has secured fresh backing to take that vision nationwide. Sumosave Retail Ventures has raised Rs.50 crore in a Pre-Series B funding round, led by consumer-focused investment firm 12 Flags Group, founded by former Reckitt Global CEO Rakesh Kapoor, with Stride Ventures providing venture debt. The company had previously raised around US$3.3 million from Lightspeed and angel investors.

Founded in 2022, Sumosave operates a Company-Owned, Company-Operated (COCO) chain of neighbourhood supermarkets focused on middle and lower-middle-income households across East and North India. Unlike premium supermarkets or hypermarkets that largely cater to affluent consumers, Sumosave’s proposition revolves around everyday grocery savings without compromising on product quality, assortment or convenience. The fresh capital will primarily fund store expansion, strengthen the supply chain and support leadership hiring as the company pursues an ambitious target of 500 stores by 2030.

The retailer currently operates 35 supermarkets and reported a revenue base of around Rs. 32.9 crore. While the company has not disclosed profitability figures, investors have highlighted its focus on affordability, operating discipline and capital-efficient growth as key reasons for backing the business.

Kampani, who brings more than three decades of experience in organised retail and previously held senior leadership roles with major retail businesses, believes India’s next phase of organised grocery growth will not come from India’s largest metros but from hundreds of underserved cities and neighbourhoods. Sumosave has therefore deliberately positioned itself away from premium retail, instead targeting consumers who spend a significant portion of their monthly household budgets on food and grocery purchases and actively seek everyday value.

What differentiates Sumosave from conventional supermarket chains is the simplicity of its retail model. Rather than relying on aggressive promotional campaigns, complex loyalty programmes or cashback offers, the retailer displays straightforward selling prices and communicates in regional languages. The company also stocks a mix of national and carefully selected local brands, reflecting regional consumption patterns instead of adopting a uniform assortment across markets. Its stores, typically spanning around 2,000 sq. ft. and 5,000 sq. ft., are designed to function as full-fledged neighbourhood supermarkets located within dense residential catchments.

Kampani has also argued that consumer behaviour in these markets differs significantly from that of metro shoppers. According to him, nearly half of Sumosave’s daily sales occur during the evening shopping window between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., while cash continues to account for around 60% of transactions despite the rapid growth of digital payments. These insights have shaped the company’s operating model around local shopping habits rather than replicating metro retail formats.

The investment also reflects growing confidence that India’s value grocery segment can coexist with both national supermarket chains and quick-commerce platforms. While large retailers such as DMart, Reliance Smart Bazaar, Spencer’s and More Retail continue expanding across the country, Sumosave is attempting to win customers through neighbourhood proximity, transparent pricing, local merchandising and a sharper focus on value-conscious households—an area that remains relatively underpenetrated in many parts of East and North India. Rather than competing head-on with hypermarkets or instant delivery platforms, the company is building a format centred on routine monthly grocery shopping, where trust, affordability and familiarity often outweigh speed.

With organised grocery retail still accounting for only a fraction of India’s overall food and grocery market, investors appear to be betting that regional, execution-led supermarket chains can carve out meaningful positions alongside larger national players. Sumosave’s latest fund raise provides Mohit Kampani with the capital to test that thesis at scale, as the company embarks on its journey from just 35 supermarkets today to a targeted network of 500 neighbourhood stores by the end of the decade.
