Swiggy has expanded its Food on Train service to 180 cities across India after witnessing a threefold year-on-year increase in orders during the first quarter of 2026. The growth was driven by the summer travel season, when millions of families travelled across the country.

The company also introduced a new ‘Scan your Ticket’ feature this summer, allowing passengers to upload their train ticket so the app can automatically detect the PNR and make food ordering easier during the journey.

Swiggy said multi-station orders, where passengers ordered food at two or more stations during a single train journey, grew by more than 300% compared to last year. These customers spent around 2.2 times more on food than those who ordered at just one station. The Bhopal-Nagpur route was the most popular two-stop food corridor, with over 1,300 passengers placing orders at both stations during the same trip.

The service also helped Swiggy attract thousands of new users every day. At Guna station in Madhya Pradesh, 66% of Food on Train orders came from customers using Swiggy for the first time. During the summer, the company added 17 new railway stations to the network, including Gurugram, Udaipur, Bikaner, Davanagere, Kayamkulam, Nanded, Amravati, Shoranur, Arrah, Tadpatri and Nizamabad. Many passengers also placed their meal orders as early as four days before their journey.

Food preferences varied across the country during the summer. Roti was the most ordered item, with more than four lakh rotis ordered across trains. Masala Dosa, Aloo Paratha and McDonald’s McAloo Tikki Burger were also among the most popular dishes, while Chicken Biryani topped the non-vegetarian category.

Demand for summer beverages also increased significantly. Mango Shake emerged as the most popular seasonal drink, with orders rising nearly ten times compared to winter. Soft drink orders increased by 354%, lassi orders doubled, and ice cream orders grew by 140%. Burger orders among students were almost twice the national average.

Speaking on the growth story of Food on Train offering by Swiggy, Deepak Maloo, Vice President- Food Strategy, Customer Experience & New Initiatives, Swiggy, said, “Food on Train has witnessed exponential growth in the last one year and the last quarter has been no different, with a 3x YoY growth in orders. It is heartening to see the growth and consumer love for this offering across the country, with customers also booking their meals well in advance. Even in tier-4 towns and cities, customers witnessed first-time digital moments when they discovered Food on Train at a junction platform while their train paused for ten minutes. Also, the university hubs have emerged as a major contributor to the growth story as we have witnessed the highest ever surge amongst student orders during this quarter, with the last week of May recording a jump of 70% in student orders with orders peaking at Kharagpur, Kanpur, and Aligarh stations, as hundreds of thousands of engineering and university students boarded trains back to campus.”

The company also highlighted regional food preferences. Travellers in North India preferred roti with curry, aloo paratha and burgers, while dosa was a favourite in the South. Biryani remained the top choice in Andhra Pradesh, especially at Vijayawada. In eastern India, passengers mostly ordered thalis, fried rice and rice bowls. On the Konkan route, burgers became the most ordered item at Madgaon Junction, overtaking biryani.

Among restaurant brands, Haldiram’s, Paradise Biryani, A2B – Adyar Ananda Bhavan, McDonald’s and KFC were the most popular choices across railway stations. Swiggy also reported strong growth in smaller towns, with orders from emerging India Rise stations increasing by 253% year-on-year, nearly double the growth seen in metro cities. The company said this reflects the growing adoption of digital food ordering among train travellers across India.
