Jumbotail, a leading B2B marketplace for food and grocery, has secured $120 million in a fresh funding round led by SC Ventures, the investment arm of Standard Chartered Plc. The round also saw participation from existing investors, including Artal Asia, the company announced on Tuesday.

While the company did not disclose its current valuation, Jumbotail was valued at approximately $1 billion post this latest infusion. Prior to the round, the company had a pre-money valuation of around $900 million. The post-money valuation, following the $120 million capital raise, now slightly exceeds $1 billion.

This marks a significant leap from Jumbotail’s earlier valuation of around $300 million in 2021, and also reflects the strategic advantage gained through its recent acquisition of Solv—a smaller B2B player previously valued at $200 million. Moneycontrol had first reported on March 27 about Jumbotail’s $120 million fundraise and earlier on February 12 about its acquisition of Solv.

Ashish Jhina, Co-founder and COO, Jumbotail, called the development a pivotal milestone. “This is a transformative moment in our journey. Together with Solv, we now help thousands of brands and MSME sellers reach over 500,000 small retailers across more than 400 cities and towns in India,” he said.

The integration of Solv, which had previously received backing from SC Ventures, underscores the investment firm’s sustained confidence in the B2B commerce space. “This integration represents a leap forward in our shared mission to empower MSMEs through technology and financial inclusion, which is a core theme for SC Ventures,” said Gautam Jain, Member of SC Ventures and a board member of Jumbotail. “Jumbotail and Solv now form a platform committed to responsible innovation with real impact for India’s entrepreneurs.”

Jumbotail, traditionally focused on vertical B2B e-commerce in groceries and related categories, is expected to expand its capabilities significantly with Solv under its fold, particularly in providing credit and financial services to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

To support this next phase of growth, the company also announced plans to aggressively ramp up hiring across key verticals including category management, product management, decision science, AI/ML, marketing, supply chain, and finance.

The funding and strategic consolidation position Jumbotail as a dominant force in India’s B2B e-commerce ecosystem, with a strong focus on driving scale, innovation, and financial inclusion for MSMEs across the country.

Jumbotail, India’s leading B2B marketplace and New Retail platform for food and grocery has raised INR 151 crore ($18.2M) equity capital in Series C3 equity funding round led by Artal Asia Pte. Ltd. (“Artal”). Heron Rock, Sabre Investment, Arkam Ventures, Jarvis Reserve Fund, Reaction Global, VII Ventures and others also participated in the round. Jumbotail plans to invest funds in scaling its suite of GTM (Go-To-Market) products and services for new and emerging brands to reach mass market consumers via Jumbotail’s nationwide kirana store network. Jumbotail is building AIdriven technologies to drive higher customer wallet share by leveraging its deep sourcing capabilities across FMCG and staples and its industry leading kirana supply chain.

Jumbotail, India’s leading B2B marketplace and New Retail platform catering to food and grocery sectors, has successfully secured INR 151 crore ($18.2M) in equity capital through its Series C3 funding round. Artal Asia Pte. Ltd. (“Artal”) spearheaded this round, with notable contributions from Heron Rock, Sabre Investment, Arkam Ventures, Jarvis Reserve Fund, Reaction Global, VII Ventures, and other esteemed investors.

The infusion of funds will fuel Jumbotail’s strategic initiatives, primarily aimed at amplifying its suite of Go-To-Market (GTM) products and services. These efforts are directed towards empowering new and emerging brands to connect with a vast consumer base through Jumbotail’s extensive network of kirana stores across the nation. Additionally, Jumbotail is committed to advancing AI-driven technologies, leveraging its robust sourcing capabilities across FMCG and staples, along with its pioneering kirana supply chain infrastructure, to enhance customer engagement and drive greater wallet share.

In essence, this investment underscores Jumbotail’s relentless pursuit of innovation and its unwavering commitment to revolutionizing the food and grocery ecosystem in India.

Ashish Jhina, Co-founder and COO Jumbotail said, “Jumbotail is the fastest, most effective and capital efficient way for brands to access over 100 million urban middle class consumers via the Kirana stores on the Jumbotail platform. We will strengthen our leadership position by going deeper into our existing markets and by helping brands reach kiranas with the lowest total cost of activation and the fastest route to market in the sector. We expect to be fully profitable on an operational basis across our entire network before the end of 2024. We are happy to see world class investors doubling down on our mission to transform India’s food and grocery retail ecosystem.”

Since raising its last round of equity funding in Dec 2021, the company has consolidated its market leadership, scaled its footprint across the country, significantly increasing the market reach for its FMCG and staples brand partners while leveraging its economies of scale to accelerate its march towards profitability. The company plans to hire world class teams in deep sourcing, category management, product management, AI/ML, and marketing.

An estimated 12 million kirana stores in India control more than 95% of the country’s $600B+ food and grocery market. Kiranas’ have proven to be a lifeline for Indian consumers, and the economic engine for the country. Technology, supply chain, and fintech solutions from startups like Jumbotail are poised to transform the kirana store ecosystem at an unprecedented pace and scale over the next few years and empower the kirana retailers to help them meet the emerging needs of the next generation Indian consumer.

At a time when the whole world was going crazy after B2C online grocery start-ups, two former classmates from Stanford University stepped out on a limb to make a counter bet. Like a lawyer prepping his case carefully, the two had closely analyzed India’s grocery retail market and arrived at the conclusion that the road to a successful retail business in grocery ran through India’s 12 million plus kirana shops.

While B2C online grocery start-ups were having their moment under the sun, Ashish Jhina and Karthik Venkateswaran launched their online B2B marketplace for food & grocery in 2015, in Bangalore. Their baby, Jumbotail took off the blocks slowly in the initial years, registering 1,000 small and medium kirana in the first year of operations. By the fifth year of its operations, Jumbotail’s customer base climbed to 30,000 retailers

Today, the platform serves 2,50,000 small and medium retailers across 50+ major cities and towns and it moves 1.1 billion units of products in a year. Worth Rs. 2,262 crore in GMV value, Jumbotail today handles 1.5 million orders every month, of which more than 75% are delivered the next day.
